  Well Organized Race

By about 2018

Review

This race is well organized by people who care about you having a positive experience. Local law enforcement & medical help drive along the entire course, they were very kind & made you feel well looked after.

Race Tips

The race has some decent hills & can be very hot/humid, I found myself darting from one side of the road to the next to try to stay in the shade of trees after mile 18. Aid stations have a plentiful supply of ice & cold sponges to help cool yourself.

Logistical Tips (Hotels, Restaurants, Parking, Discounts, etc.)

I stayed in the firehouse for the night before the race, very unique experience that adds to the friendly small town environment. Post race there were enough snacks but little food, local vendors have delicious food options to buy. If you're hungry after the race plan to bring some money so you can support some of the small businesses.

Review

A real nice smaller race with a local flavor and a very welcoming community. Packet pick up at a local High School but no expo. they do have pasta dinner included in the inexpensive entry fee. Nice Tech shirt, medal and a cool Mason Jar finishing prize. The water stops have a contest so many of them are in costumes or have a theme (the famous feud, Hawaii, etc) which is fun. Quiet roads w very little traffic. This is a popular race w/ 50 staers and maniacs. Race is run the same weekend as a Hatfield and McCioy reunion

Race Tips

The course has quite a few smaller hills and a killer from about 5.5 to 7.25 over Blackberry Mtn. Course runs by some of the sites of the famous feud and through Matewan WV site of the famous massacre. Also runs along a one lane river road (some tough gravel and mud this year) and over a suspension bridge that was different but could be un-nerving if you have an issue with heights. You must be ready for hills but luckily the toughest is early in the race.

Logistical Tips (Hotels, Restaurants, Parking, Discounts, etc.)

Local Hotels fill up fast. I stayed on Logan WV about 35 minutes away. the race begins at a local supermarket and you can park in their lot. There are also shuttle buses from the few area hotels. The race begins in Kentucky and ends in WV. There was a nice post-race area and there was another street fair going on as well. They have post race shuttle buses back to the supermarket or your hotel. I arrived at race site @ 6:00 (7:00am start) and it was plenty early.
