5 Stars from 1 ReviewsThe Athens Marathon, known as "The Authentic," is a historic point-to-point road race that follows the legendary route of Pheidippides from the town of Marathon to Athens. It is widely considered one of the most difficult major marathons in the world due to its punishing uphill profile and demanding middle section. While the finish is a net-downhill, the cumulative vertical gain makes it a test of endurance rather than speed.
The course is run entirely on paved asphalt roads. It begins at the Marathon Start Stadium and follows the Marathonos Avenue through several coastal and inland towns before concluding at the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens. The layout is relatively straight with few technical turns, but the heavy camber of the main road can be taxing on a runner's joints over 26.2 miles.
The elevation profile is divided into three distinct phases: the flat start, the long climb, and the final descent.
The Athens Marathon is not a PR (Personal Record) course. The sheer volume of uphill running typically results in finishing times 15–20 minutes slower than flat city marathons. PR attempts usually fall apart between miles 15 and 19 if a runner has not trained for uphills and downhills. It is best suited for strength-based runners who value historical significance and mental toughness over a fast clock time. The ultimate reward is the final 150 meters on the marble track of the ancient Panathenaic Stadium.
Don't waste months of training only to run the wrong pace.
