The God’s Country Marathon Race Series offers a challenging point-to-point road race through the rugged highlands of north-central Pennsylvania. Considered as one of the toughest small marathons in the United States, its difficulty is comes from a massive mountain climb. The USATF-certified route serves as a Boston Marathon Qualifier, offering a hilly challenge for runners.
The point-to-point course runs on the paved asphalt surface of scenic U.S. Route 6. The race begins at an elevation of 1,300 feet above sea level in the small community of Galeton. After an initial two-mile dogleg loop east toward the Nob Hill area and around Galeton’s Berger Lake, runners head straight west through the heart of the heavily forested Susquehannock State Forest, ultimately finishing at the Coudersport Courthouse Square.
The defining section of the race arrives just past the 14-mile mark. Here, runners confront a grueling, three-mile climb up the infamous Denton Hill, which crosses the Eastern Continental Divide and peaks at a demanding 2,424 feet. Once over the summit near mile 17 to 18, the elevation profile transitions into rolling hills on a steep, continuous downhill track that drops roughly 800 feet into the town of Coudersport.
A successful pacing strategy a conservative start during the first 14 miles of gradual climbing to survive the relentless incline of Denton Hill. Runners who overextend early often find their pacing plans ruined by the time they reach the summit, leaving them unable to take advantage of the eight-mile descent to the finish.
Don't waste months of training only to run the wrong pace.
