4.8 Stars from 5 ReviewsThe New England Green River Marathon is a fast, net-downhill race that crosses from Vermont to Massachusetts. A USATF-certified and Boston Marathon qualifying course, it features a total elevation drop of 2,100 feet balanced by 650 feet of uphill climbing.
The point-to-point course begins in Vermont at the Potash Hill campus in Marlboro and runs south into Massachusetts, concluding at Greenfield Community College. The first 21 miles are mostly run on unpaved, packed dirt and gravel country roads running parallel to the Green River, providing a forgiving surface for the joints. The final five miles of the course transition entirely to fully paved asphalt city roads as the route enters the municipal limits of Greenfield.
The course starts with a sharp, immediate drop right in the first mile. The majority of the course flows through a rolling, naturally shaded river forest canopy, where runners pass regional landmarks including a historic 1870s covered bridge. The primary tactical tests arrive around miles 17 and 20, where runners must conquer three demanding hills that test fatigued legs. The final five miles leave the forest shade behind, presenting an exposed, unshaded run toward the college finish line.
A successful pacing strategy depends on early restraint during the opening downhill miles and saving energy for the back half of the race. Runners who treat the dirt roads as a sprint often find their pacing plans ruined by the distinct hills starting at mile 17. This boutique, small-scale event perfectly suits Boston Marathon aspirants and those who prefer quiet nature trails and smaller fields over standard city road races.
Don't waste months of training only to run the wrong pace.
