Friendliest fellow runners, beautiful course

Full Review:

This was my first small, non-city marathon. It was easy--no parking hassles, easy for my husband to spectate. The race volunteers were all fantastic, and fellow runners were amazing, too. There really isn't any crowd support beyond volunteers and a few family/friends at a couple of the aid stations, but the other runners--including the ultrarunners--were super supportive. Very different feel with all the ultrarunners out there--very inspiring! Beautiful course with deer, fall colors, and the tunnel, which really is cool. Would absolutely do this one again.

Race Tips:

The course really is fairly flat. The uphill going out and the downhill coming back are noticeable, but barely. Pacing is therefore easy. I brought a hydration pack but probably didn't need it with the available water stations, especially given the cool weather.

Travel/Logistics Tips:

You don't have to get there super early and parking is easy at the start line/city park. We stayed 10 miles away in Marion; the drive to and from the race is simple and no big deal.

Beautiful trail

Full Review:

The trail and tunnel were beautiful, making the sites great. I personally liked the small size, space of aid stations, and the inspiration that I drew from seeing the 100 mile runners.

Race Tips:

The gradual 300 ft plus climb did get me pretty bad, I recommend going out slow and saving it for the last 9 miles which are downhill. After the first 3 you have 9 miles uphill , then a down up down up dip, followed by 9 downhill.

Travel/Logistics Tips:

I stayed in metropolis which is pretty close, parking is no problem, arrived about 40 minutes ahead of time with plenty to spare. They served pretty good and much appreciated burgers for free at the race
