Course Description

The BMO Vancouver Marathon is one of Canada's premier races known for its net-downhill, point-to-point layout. While the course finishes lower than it starts, the route isrolling and has several significant inclines, making it a moderately difficult course rather than a completely net-downhill course. It serves as a Boston Marathon qualifier and traverses several diverse neighborhoods and parklands.

Course Layout and Terrain

The race follows a point-to-point route, starting at Queen Elizabeth Park and concluding in Downtown Vancouver at West Pender St. The terrain is entirely paved road, utilizing city streets, residential boulevards, and dedicated seawall paths. The course navigates through the University of British Columbia (UBC) campus, the Kitsilano neighborhood, and a large 9-kilometer segment around the perimeter of Stanley Park.

Elevation and Notable Sections

The elevation profile is persistently rolling, with a total descent of approximately 315 meters and a total ascent of 250 meters.

  • The Start and Camosun Hill (Miles 1–10): The race begins with a net descent from the park, but runners face the course's most notable challenge at Camosun Hill just past Mile 5. This is a steep, steady incline that requires significant effort management.
  • The Seawall (Miles 20–25): This long stretch around Stanley Park is exceptionally flat and at sea level. However, it is highly exposed to potential coastal winds and features numerous sustained curves that can be mentally taxing in the final 10K.
  • Burrard Street Bridge: A notable mid-race incline occurs as runners cross the bridge to move from Kitsilano toward the downtown peninsula.

The Vancouver Marathon offers moderate PR potential due to its net-downhill nature, but success is dependent on tactical hill management. PR attempts often fall apart if a runner attacks the Camosun Hill climb too aggressively early in the race or fails to account for wind on the exposed Stanley Park seawall. It is best suited for runners who can maintain a rhythm through the early rollers and capitalize on the flat, scenic final miles toward the downtown finish.

Great Marathon - Somewhat Hilly

Full Review:

Somewhat hilly, total elevation gain 1,000' plus. Net elevation drop of approx.200'. Great support and large crowds to cheer you on, very scenic..... Very well organized.....

Race Tips:

First half has biggest climb. Most downhills are gentle enough to let yourself run. Only one downhill steep enough you have to check your speed.....

Full Review:

Very, very scenic and the best is saved for last (exept last 1.5km which is back to streets for the finish downtown) where the route is the sea wall around Stanley Park.

There is a 1/2 and a relay as well. Good expo, good race shirt. Starting area was very well organized.

Race Tips:

Pretty flat, one hill around 9km. can except cool (10-15c temps) and possibility of rain. This year (2017) was 15c sunny no rain. Was perfect.

Travel/Logistics Tips:

Stay down town.Recommend VRBO or something like that but all price range of hotels are available as well. Tons of restaraunts and shopping. Since winter olympics there is a train from airport to down town. Really makes it easy.

Americans 1.00US = 1.37CDN, your dollar goes a long way in Canada.

Full Review:

Well organized race with plenty of volunteers and good expo. What makes this race stand out is the scenery. Incredible ocean views then the final 12KMs are around the Stanley Park sea wall into downtown Vancouver.

The first half has a long descent then some climbing. A sharp climb with pretty good crowds followed by false flat for a mile or two. My pace went from 7flat/mile to 7:08 during this 3 miles stretch. from there you go into UBC Campus and enjoy a great descent into Kitsilano where the ocean views start for last half. Great crowds here. From there you go over the bridge into Vancouver and around the sea wall. Quite possibly the most beautiful run in Canada is the sea wall.

Race Tips:

Pacing the first 10K because it is primarly down hill. Like Boston, don't get carried away!

Travel/Logistics Tips:

Race site has race registration / hotel booking combination discounts.
